Whether you're visiting for a vacation or just a quick day trip, it’s natural to want to relax and let yourself go a little. That’s understandable. You’re surrounded by a breathtaking landscape where the scale of everything—the ocean, cliffs, and beaches can feel much bigger than what many people experience elsewhere. The coast is expansive and powerful—and sometimes that makes it easy to forget a few important safety guidelines.
The ocean is beautiful and inviting, but it also holds tremendous power. Too many people underestimate its power and temperature. Just look at the number of emergency calls handled by the Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue Department every year. Locals regularly see their trucks racing by with sirens and lights on—sometimes multiple times a day.
Pay Attention to Advisories
Please do not ignore advisories. They exist for a reason. Currents, winds, tides, and rapidly changing weather all play a role in coastal safety. At times conditions seem to look fine, but this can change in literally five to ten minutes. We’re serious!
In doubt, have a look at a few of the many sneaker wave incidents caught on camera. We are not engaging in sensationalism or trying to grab catchy content to draw attention. It's important visitors understand how these events happen very quickly. There is no terrifying music like in the movies to alert you. Nature just does its thing. - Ian, Owner FCCB
At FunCycles, we stop all rentals during shore-related advisories. We do this for one reason: your safety.
It's an excellent idea to signup for the emergency warning notifications.
What Lurks Beneath the Surface
During the summer months the ocean can appear calm and harmless. That can be misleading. People often venture too far out or get too close to rocks and get caught in rip currents.
Rip currents are extremely powerful and cannot be fought directly. In other words, a lot of these rip currents travel with much faster and with more power than you can imagine. You can’t just swim your way out of them that easily, even if you know how. And, even if you understand how to escape one, the cold water temperature can quickly lead to hypothermia.
What looks peaceful from the beach can be very dangerous once you’re in the water.
Conditions Can Change Quickly
Everything on the coast feels more dynamic and alive—including the weather. In fall, winter, and spring (and sometimes even in summer), conditions can shift quickly. It’s not unusual to experience two or three, and sometimes more transitions in a single day—from sunshine and warmth to rain, wind, and cooler temperatures.
Visitors often head out on a hike or bike ride dressed for the current weather, bringing little water, food, or extra layers. When the weather suddenly shifts, they can quickly become cold, wet, and uncomfortable.
Keep It Fun—And Smart
A little preparation goes a long way. Bringing an extra layer, water, and basic supplies can make a big difference if conditions change.
At FunCycles we see this often. Riders arrive with minimal clothing and head out on the coast. Even a simple windbreaker can be a game-changer. Many return colder than expected. Most of the time it’s just an uncomfortable surprise—but occasionally it can become more serious.
Although we do not have a huge selection, there is a reason why at FynCycles we carry wind breakers and basic rain ponchos and jackets. It’s not our core business, we just know how important they can be.

Communication Isn’t Always Reliable
Cell phone coverage can be limited in some areas along the coast. In places like dips or valleys within Ecola State Park for example, cell signals can disappear entirely.
Because of this, it’s not always safe to rely solely on your phone in an emergency. Alternatives like GPS-based emergency devices or ham radios can provide additional safety when exploring remote areas. Your local outdoor store can help you choose the right option.
It’s also a good idea to let someone know your plans. Share where you’re going and roughly when you expect to return. If something unexpected happens, that information can help emergency responders find you faster.
