General Questions

Can my kids ride with us?

Absolutely! At the moment, we carry trikes or funcycles for children 4 years old and up. Kids less than 4 years old may ride in a trailer which is available for rental and may be attached to any of our adult bicycles (beach cruisers and fat bikes), and funcycles.

Do you rent E-bikes?

City of Cannon Beach regulations do not allow the rental of E-bikes. Although, E-bikes are allowed on Cannon Beach providing they are ridden on the wet sand only, and in an authorized area where closures are not in effect for safety reasons or to protect the natural environment.

Make sure you understand which category e-bike you are operating. Some categories are not allowed in Oregon State Parks and in cities that post clear guidelines regarding which e-bike are categories are authorized in there jurisdiction and which are not. Consult Oregon laws (HB 4103) for more on those classifications, and local regulations and laws at the municipal level.

Do I need to be fit to ride on the beach?

The short answer is "no". It's important to understand however that riding on the sand, even the hard pack sand, requires more effort since there is more energy loss and friction.

Another factor to consider and likely the one to be most mindful about is the wind. Winds will slow bike and trike riders down a lot. The good news is, this is not a race. You are here to have fun, laugh, and make it back to your room full of good memories and joyful moments. If you have to fight the wind, take your time. Accept the fact that you might not travel at the same speed against the wind versus riding with the wind in your back.

What is the difference between a trike and a funcycle?

They are both the same thing. We mostly use the term fun cycle. Fun cycles, trikes, or beach cycle all refer to the same three-wheeled beach bikes that are available for rent at our store.

Do you only carry funcycles?

No. You have many options to choose from:

  • Beach riding: fun cycles, beach cruisers, and fat bikes
  • Street riding: beach cruisers and fat bikes
  • Beach accessories: beach wagons, beach games, toys, and kites.

Planning Your Visit

How does your schedule work?

We essentially follow the tides cycle. We normally close during high tides - more or less 2 hours on each end of high tide. High tides flood the beach and cover the hard sand, what we commonly refer to as "the dark sand", where trike and bike riding is at its best. We may open at high tides for our clients to access our retail section, and to rent bicycles to ride on the streets of Cannon Beach.

When planning your visit in Cannon Beach it's helpful to account for the tides cycles. Many activities rely on the tides, high or low. Surfing for example is usually better closer to high tides, while shellfish are usually more accessible during low tide. Fun cycles and bikes need the hard pack sand revealed at low tides.

Can I reserve online?

At the moment, we do not offer online reservations or rentals. We operate on a first-come-first-serve basis. We do carry over 100 bicycles and trikes and rarely run out.

Do you have parking on site?

We have 2 parking spaces in front of the store reserved for 10-minute parking. Free parking is available across the street in the city's public parking. You may find parking on the streets, but make sure to look at the signage to avoid parking in no parking areas.

Why do rentals stop when it rains?

Your safety is our top priority. Coastal weather can change rapidly, often without much warning. Rain can bring cooler temperatures and damp conditions that make for an uncomfortable — and sometimes dangerous — ride. If you're far from the shop and experience equipment failure, it becomes even more difficult to assist you.

In addition, rain often comes with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning. When the forecast includes these conditions, we close rentals entirely to eliminate any risk. Again, this decision is made for your safety.

Why do you stay closed even after the rain stops?

There are two main reasons:

1. Poor riding conditions:
After a rainstorm, the beach sand becomes saturated with water. It can take hours — sometimes more than a full day — to properly drain, especially depending on the tide. Until the sand dries out sufficiently, bike tires tend to sink and riders can struggle to get going, turning a fun ride into a frustrating one.

2. Equipment protection:
Rain, sand, and saltwater are tough on bikes. They cause rust, wear down the drivetrain, and often lead to mechanical issues like the chain slipping or seizing up. Keeping our bikes in top shape requires careful maintenance, and sending them out in wet, sandy conditions increases the need for repairs. This slows us down and makes it harder to provide bikes that are safe and ready to ride.

We want you to have the best experience possible — and that means heading out on a well-maintained bike in enjoyable, safe conditions.
